UK public want NHS to support research

A recent poll by MORI has shown that 93% of people want the NHS to be encouraged or required to support research.

The Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) commissioned the poll as part of their strategy to keep medical research central to the debate concerning how the new Health and Social Care Bill will affect the way the NHS works in the future.

The poll also found that 72% would like to be offered opportunities to be involved in trials of new medicines or treatments if they suffered from a health condition that affects their day-to-day life.

'Better care and new treatments for CGD and other conditions are only possible because of research. This poll shows just how much the general public support research within the NHS. We need to ensure that any new legislation affecting the NHS takes this into account for patient benefit’ comments Dr Susan Walsh, our Research and Support Programme Manager and AMRC Trustee.

Lord Phil Willis, Chair of the AMRC, said: ‘The MORI poll is the clearest evidence yet that the public not only support and value medical research but patients would want the opportunity to be involved in clinical trials if they had a health condition. For the charitable sector which ploughs over £1bn into ground breaking research every year this is exactly the message it needs to convince donors that their money is being well spent.’
