The Templars 7 Rfc will get the CGDRT name and logo on Sky TV on 9th July 2011, when the team has been invited to take part in the Vauxhall Charity Middlesex 7s at Twickenham. The Invitation Sevens tournament, first held in 1926, is one of the oldest Sevens competitions in England and the most famous rugby charity event in the world.
Organiser Rob Cain says: ‘This is obviously a massive achievement for the team and we are all so delighted that we will be able to raise awareness to even more of the British public with over 40, 000 spectators on the day and the many more hundreds of thousands around the world watching the event live on Sky Sports. This will be our hardest challenge as a team to date but we are pleased that we can give the CGDRT exposure on Sky Sports to the rugby world and general public. While we have been making the rugby public aware of the CGDRT on our travels to different parts of the rugby world in the last 2 seasons, this will this will really give the CGD Research Trust maximum exposure for one day.’
The tournament coincides with Issue 3 of Rugby 7’s, a new online rugby magazine, at http://www.ukrugbysevens.com The magazine features the Templars, and the CGD RT is mentioned on p’s 48, 49 and 65.
The Templars have had a great few weeks at their European tournaments. Rob says: ‘Through this we have managed to give the CGD Research Trust top billing wherever we have gone through local media, website coverage, tournament programmes, commentators and of course the playing kit. It was great to see the rugby public not only embrace the team where ever we travelled but also embrace the charity.
Our first crusade was at the Manchester 7s and although the weather was awful we still managed to play well and beat some very talented teams, having to pull it out of the bag on 2 occasions to score at the end of the game to win. With some heroic tackling ensured we managed to reach the semi finals where we lost to the eventual winners Spain, who the week previously beat England.
The following week we set of to the Amsterdam 7s where again we had a lot of close battles on both days beating a few of the tournament favorites along the way to qualify for the final. This again was a great achievement by the team and players. However the many close games took their toll and ultimately the team ran out of energy and we lost the game in the second half. But again we played in front of 8000 plus spectators for the final alone and many more thousands watched us over this prestigious 2 day tournament.
Our last crusade or so we thought was at Bournemouth. The previous 2 weeks really did take their toll! We had a wonderful day at our family even if the weather was horrible. It was great to see people turn out to cheer the team on. Especially to see Alex and his friend Travis who both at one stage were looking like great subs.'
Alex seized the opportunity to describe what CGD is to a roving reporter, explaining what is wrong with his neutrophils. He was a natural!
'We manage to secure attention for the charity at all the events we play in and talk about the CGDRT wherever we play. The Amsterdam Sevens feature the CGDRT on their homepage at
http://www.amsterdamsevens.com/
We all hope to see some of you at Twickenham on the 9th July for what we believe will be a very special day . The team will competing against the likes of England, Wale, all the Aviva Premiership clubs , The British Army and many more fully professional teams so we hope you can cheer the team on even if it’s only in front of the TV at home!’
The Templars are unable to invite guests to this tournament, but If you want to buy tickets log on to http://www.middlesexrugbysevens.com/ticket-info.html
