Research news from France - Protein therapy for CGD
An alternative therapeutic treatment for CGD is by the delivery of therapeutic proteins.
A project funded by CGD RT at the University Joseph Fourier and Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in Grenoble, France is making this a real possibility for the future. Professor Francoise Morel, of GREPI (Groupe de Recherche et d’Etude du Processus Inflammatoire) explains, “ In this new approach the protein that is missing in CGD will be put back into cells rather than the gene. We have made the first steps to make this possible and proved that using special delivery agents called proteoliposomes we can get Gp91phox, the protein affected in X-linked CGD, into cells. What is exciting is that once the protein is taken up by the cells the artificial Gp91phox has similar activities to those associated with its natural counterpart. We believe we have demonstrated good “proof of concept” and that protein therapy could be another option for the treatment of CGD in the future. This therapy would help ‘top-up’ their immune systems over a short period of time to fight off infections”.
