Get involved in research

Get involved in the research at the University College London to investigate inflammatory bowel disease in CGD. Volunteers needed!

Volunteers with CGD are needed to help with a study investigating genes involved in inflammatory bowel disease. To take part you will need to donate 50-100mls of blood. They will screen this for genes that may predispose to bowel inflammation and investigate how they affect the function of your immune cells. You can get in touch with Dr Rahman on 0207 6796173 or by e-mail F.Rahman@ucl.ac.uk.

What will happen? Dr Rahman will go through an information sheet explaining in detail the purpose of the research study; they will record your name, date of birth and clinical data as recorded in your hospital notes and will keep all the information in a secure and confidential manner. If you agree to take part you will be asked to sign a consent form.

Importantly, there are no major risks or side effects and deciding not to take part will not affect your treatment or relationship with the doctors involved in your care. You can withdraw from the study at any time.

Dr Andrew Smith who will perform the laboratory investigation told the Trust “In order for us to reach any significant results we would need 20 CGD patients to take part. The study may not directly benefit patients at the moment but we hope that it will benefit patients with gastrointestinal disease in the future.  In addition, it is possible that future treatments will be specific to the genetic make-up of each patient.  Therefore, conceivably, it may be an advantage to have these genes identified.  We would be delighted if CGD patients took part in this important study.
