A Sad Loss to the Trust
Shortly before Christmas the CGD Research Trust lost an old friend in Denis Carter, Lord Carter of Devizes, who helped in its early years and was one of the patrons of Jeans for Genes in 1996-1997.
Denis Carter had a deep interest in helping those affected by genetic conditions and by disabilities. He felt passionately that all should be helped to lead as normal a life as possible and a lot of his energies in his working life were dedicated to this. His own children were born with retinitis pigmentosa. His son died as a teenager; his daughter, who became blind, lived and worked in London and also sadly died young.
Denis was a source of great encouragement to the charity and solidly supported its aims and those of Jeans for Genes. He had great warmth, humour and infectious enthusiasm. At his requiem mass on 3rd January, the congregation listened to tributes that lifted a veil, just a little, on the wide scope of his activities that helped disabled people and gave an insight into the wide range of people whose lives he touched. With his wife, Teresa, he made a great difference to many.
It is anticipated that a memorial service will be held in London in March.
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to his widow.
Denis Victor Carter, Baron Carter of Devizes, politician, born January 17 1932; died December 18 2006.
