UK and US National Stem Cell Banks to join forces

The national stem cell banks in the UK and US have recently announced their intention to form a partnership to promote research, create international standards and distribute their respective cell lines more efficiently.

The UK Stem Cell Bank was created in 2004 and is funded by the Medical Research Council. It acts a repository for stem cells derived from embryos and adults. Its role is to supply stem cell lines for researchers working to establish the basis for treating diseases.

Before stem cell lines are banked they have to undergo extensive characterisation studies and pass strict controls intended to assure the quality of the bank’s cells for research and therapy. Forty stem cell lines have so far been approved for banking and the bank aims to add around 20 more cell lines each year.

Scientists who want to use the bank’s stem cells have to make formal requests through a steering panel that determines if the proposed work is ethical and of high quality. This fantastic resource should help scientists make significant steps forward in stem cell science so it can be used to improve the health of thousands of people in the UK and elsewhere.
