Helped by ten years of financial support from the CGD Research Trust and the Jeans for Genes charity, genetic research at the renowned UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH) has led to clinical breakthroughs of international significance.
A new Jeans for Genes Centre for Inherited Diseases, launched on 14 November 2006, connects clinicians and scientists in genetics, boosting collaboration to find new cures for inherited disorders - a promising development for people with CGD.
The new virtual grouping that is the Jeans for Genes Centre facilitates closer collaboration between many different teams across University College, London for three purposes:
- To pinpoint genes whose 'faults' create inherited disorders. (The genes linked with the majority of the 4000+ genetic diseases are not yet known.)
- To understand how genes make things happen and how this can go wrong ( biomechanical pathways) - and to understand that different conditions with similar symptoms probably involve defects in the same pathways.
- To locate treatments based on understanding the chemistry of the affected pathways
Professor Andrew Copp, Dean of ICH, said the group of charities that make Jeans for Genes (including the CGD Research Trust) "deserves this recognition for the great contribution they have made, and will make in future, towards essential research into genetic disease."
The launch at the ICH's Kennedy Lecture theatre accompanied an Inaugural Symposium at which three ICH professors (Gudrun Moore, Raoul Hennekam and Philip Beales) gave lectures on genetic research, followed by a reception. Press coverage of CGD was on display.
Jeans for Genes is an umbrella charity. At its heart are four partner charities: the CGD Research Trust, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity, MPS (Mucopolysaccharide Disease Society) and PiA (Primary Immunodeficiency Association)
