Donation by the CGD Association USA

The CGD Association in the USA has generously given us $20,000 to help fund gene therapy related research.

The money will be used to carry out important preliminary work to test how well the new gene delivery tools for CGD, designed by our researchers at Great Ormond Street and in Frankfurt, will work in animal models. This new gene transfer tool is a second-generation vector designed for improved safety and for more natural regulation of the X-CGD protein production in white blood cells. The work will be done by Professor Mary Dinauer, a world leader on CGD research, at the Herman B Wells Centre for Paediatric Research at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Professor Dinauer is already collaborating with our gene therapy researchers based in London and in Frankfurt. The project will determine the effectiveness of the new vector in improving resistance to fight infections and inflammation caused by the fungi and bacteria that are threatening to people with CGD. The studies are an essential prerequisite for future clinical trials and will add real value to our gene therapy research programme.
