Science budget cut by £100 Million in the UK
It was announced this week that £100 million is to be sliced from the UK science budget over the next two years. This has come after a background of previous year–on-year increases by the Government and has come as a big shock to the research community. One of the biggest losers is the Medical Research Council (MRC), which loses some £11 million. This is likely to affect the funding of studentships and clinical research fellows and could affect laboratories funded by CGD RT. The decision by the Department of Trade and Industry has been described as ‘a worrying message about the priority accorded to science’ and indicates that the science budget is highly vulnerable to cuts.
