Recurring abscesses and the formation of granulomas are common, painful problems in CGD. Work published in the European Journal of Immunology
highlights a potential new way to treat early stage CGD associated infections and abscesses.
Dr Brian Cobb at the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, USA, headed the work funded by CGDRT.
'We showed that the chemical mediator nitric oxide (NO) plays a central role in abscess formation in CGD mice. CGD mice produced 10-times more of the
chemical mediator nitric oxide (NO) than healthy mice in response to a bacterial challenge. This overproduction of NO coincided with increased
inflammation and severe abscess formation.
Significantly we were able to show that lowering NO production using a novel drug to levels seen in healthy mice reduced the number and severity of
abscesses in CGD mice. This suggests a potential new treatment option for resolving infections in CGD and preventing abscess and granuloma formation',
said Dr Cobb.
