For the Adidas 5k Women's Challenge Sunday September 11th 2011 - Last chance to register!
The CGDRT and Jeans for Genes are looking for 100 women like the runners pictured left. But unlike them, you don’t have to run – you can walk or jog! And it ends in a lovely picnic, sponsored by Marks and Spencers.
We would like our 100 ladies to raise £100 each. (But of course you don’t have to limit it to £100!)
This is a more relaxed and less taxing challenge than those taken by our Glasgow Trailblazers and Balham Mums on the Run!
There is a last chance to sign up – please phone Ruth now on 020 7199 3311 or contact events@jeansforgenesday.com You will need to tell Ruth that you are running for the CGDRT.
Experienced runners Katy Gall and Melissa Nast signed up for the Glasgow 2011 Ignis Asset Management 10k Run in December 2010. Then it occurred to them to run in support of 10 year old Mark Stewart’s charity and they were joined by non-runner Mandy Schmidtt. Mark was about to undergo a bone marrow transplant (BMT).
Katy approached her training in a highly organised way. ‘So organised I’m probably very annoying!’ she said. ‘There are so many helpful websites. I used them to map my run. You can plot your route online. They work out the distances. Sportstracker is also good – it downloads an app to your mobile and tracks your position through GPS as you listen to your music. In theory it makes it easier – but you do have to switch it on properly at the outset!’
‘We trained separately – Mel before work, Katy after work and Mandy at lunchtime or the evenings.’
Mandy, a natural athlete, was very nervous before the run. ‘My 2-year old Ollie became our mascot. Having him helped my pre-race nerves.’
'We got fantastic support at home and at work. People continually asked how it was going. It gives a spur to training when you see another donation coming in.’
The Glasgow Run goes through residential areas, with cheering residents and pipe bands, and a country park. ‘It’s lovely. 2/3rd through the park there’s a big hill, covered by trees. It was quite muggy so going into the trees was a wall of cool air.’ There were some surprising sights: ‘At the top of the hill was a semi-naked key-board player (!) with someone on the drums and people calling out ‘It’s the last hill!’
‘You said we looked calm and composed at the finish – but we were delighted to cross the line. The best bit of the day was texting Debbie, Mark’s Mum, who told us that Mark’s BMT engraftment had taken. That was wonderful!’
Katy, Mel and Mandy raised a staggering £2,040.00.
Balham Mums on the Run included Leigh Alexander and 7 friends, all new mums – Charlotte Cherry, Eliza Hawkes, Lynn Beaugie, Vicky Bentall, Tori Berry, Laura Field and Emily Ewart-Perkins.
They set up Justgiving pages - Leigh begged for support as they ditched the cakes and attempted to regain their figures in aid of a great charity – and started training. Then they started to think how else they could reach their financial target. ‘Emily recently had a brilliant idea of holding a car boot sale. There was a great response from all the girls and on Sunday we stuffed a car full of treasures and tat and spent the day at the Battersea car boot sale.’ Having negotiated with a scary hawker for an excellent pitch, top sellers Laura, Tori and Lynn were ruthless in getting great deals on women’s and children’s clothes, shoes and handbags. Leigh says ‘Emily managed to shift an entire table of cosmetics and other assorted items, and I struggled to get rid of men’s shirts (at £2 each. What is wrong with people!) Vicky and husband kindly donated a float of over £40 in change and all the husbands more or less looked after the babies for the few hours we were at the sale.
Leigh was being modest – she made the best sale of the day – a driving instruction manual and DVD to a new learner who was delighted.
The 10th July arrived and at the end of it a triumphant team were keen to run again in the 2012 British London 10K!
The car boot sale made over £340, swelling their combined total to £1,617, excluding Gift Aid.
