All in the same boat

Thanks to a Trustee of the CGD Research Trust, Geoff Creamer, the winning boat in the 2007 Southport 24 Hour Race sailed home emblazoned with the logo of Jeans for Genes – our biggest fundraiser.

September 17th at the Marine Lake, Southport, will be remembered as a triumphant day for this charity as well the 8-man crew from Bolton Sailing Club, who took turns in pairs.

Director of the CGD Research Trust, Liz Nelson, was delighted: “Bolton Sailing Club had to beat off 69 other boats to win, and finished the job in a howling gale. It inspires the rest of us to come up with novel ways to raise public awareness about Jeans for Genes, especially in the North West. This will help increase total donations to the CGD Research Trust, boosting our research and support services.”

Geoff Creamer, who has two sons with chronic granulomatous disorder, added: “We are very grateful to the Bolton Sailing Club for making Jeans for Genes their club charity this year, and I appeal to other sporting and social clubs to do the same. Such clubs often respond well to direct, very local approaches from families and friends with personal experience of CGD. We all just need to pluck up the courage to ask.
“A big thank you to Speed Sails for donating our new Jeans for Genes mainsail, to race hosts West Lancashire Yacht club, and to their event sponsors, Mailspeed Marine.”

As well as taking the overall winner’s prize, Bolton Sailing Club were judged to have given the best cumulative performance over three years, and took a further 6 awards. The crew were: Chris Jobson, Gary Deighan, Ian Platt, Chris Jolly, Mark Platt, Graham Hutchinson, Mike Senior and Dale Knowles.
