Millions tuned in to BBC One to watch Dr J Craig Venter, who won the race to map the complete human genome, deliver the prestigious Richard Dimbleby Lecture this year (Monday, 4th December).
We witnessed it first hand, joining an invited audience that heaved with famous faces including the BBC’s top brass. The floor manager restored all our faith in the integrity of the BBC, and television in general, when he took centre stage to instruct us: “No matter what you think of the lecture, will you please applaud!”
Venter needs no fake adulation. Introduced by David Dimbleby as “rebel, maverick, outsider”, here was the man who led the team that cracked the code of the human genome “at a tenth of the cost, in a fraction of the time” expected, trouncing rival government-funded efforts in numerous countries. He delivered a wonderful, broad sweep of a genetic vision with the same passion and brilliance that runs through his recent autobiography, A Life Decoded.
Families waiting for answers to genetic illnesses like chronic granulomatous disorder will find both his book and his lecture a source of hope and inspiration, encompassing everything from treatments for diseases, to solutions to save our fragile planet.
