Regular giving

Regular Giving - payroll and standing order

1    Payroll

You can give tax free donations directly from your salary. It's simple.

What is payroll giving?

Payroll giving is where employees can donate to the CGD Research Trust directly from gross salary. This benefits the employee and the charity - it costs the donor less and the charity receives more.

How does it work?

Your donation will come from your gross salay and the tax you would have paid is also given to the charity. For example, if you pledge £10 from your gross salary, it only costs you £7.80 (at the rate of 22% of tax) or £6 (at the 40% rate of tax), but the charity still receives the full £10.

How can I do this?

You need to talk to your HR department to find out if they are registered with a payroll giving agency. If they are not, they can find out everything they need to know at www.hmrc.gov.uk/payrollgiving

There will be little admin cost to the employer as the payroll giving agency will do most of the work. The HMRC says that in any event, any costs of running a scheme are allowed as a deduction against the employer profits for tax purposes. So the employer can benefit too!

2     Standing order

What if I don't want to give through payroll?

You can set up a standing order. Your bank will advise you what forms to fill in - and we will give them our bank details. You can choose how often your donations are made, for example monthly, once a year or some other period that suits you. If you have signed a gift aid form, we can also claim gift aid on your donations.
