Susan Walsh
Susan became the charity’s Medical Research Officer in August 2002. She has a science background and has degree in Biochemistry and a Ph.D. She worked for many years as a research fellow doing laboratory based biomedical research on osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and myasthenia gravis. She has worked in industry, hospitals and university research laboratories, has held many research grants and published numerous papers on her research work. Her work has included developing reagents for HLA tissue typing and research on the developmental potential of human bone marrow stem cells to make bone and cartilage. During her career she has worked at the National Institutes of Health in the USA and at an INSERM immunology research unit in France.
Susan was elected in 2009 to the Executive Council of the Association of Medical Research Charities, an umbrella organisation for over 121 charities which between them account for over £1 billion spend on medical and health research She is also a member of the Rare Disease UK Working Group on Coordination of Research. Susan has contributed to several AMRC workshops, a Patient Focus Group Meeting run by the MRC on Patient Reported Clinical Outcomes and a breakfast APPG on Medical Research on use of patient data for medical research.
Her responsibilities are very broad including advising on research strategy, managing peer review, IPR issues, contracts, finance, research communication, policy issues and managing CGDRT funded support services.
Susan likes to keep fit by jogging, playing tennis and badminton and is a lover of the outdoors and a keen hiker. She is also a Trustee for a small medical research charity.
